Kid-Approved Dinner Idea: Pretzel-Crusted Chicken Strips

Minimal Effort, Maximum Flavor: Your Go-To Chicken Recipe

Some days you need to feed the picky eaters some chicken in order to avoid an uprising, but can't fire up the oven thanks to the heat. This was our solution.

Ingredients:

three large chicken breasts, boneless and skinless

2 cups pretzel sticks

1 large egg

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 cup stone ground mustard

2 tablespoons honey

1/2 teaspoon parsley

1/2 teaspoon thyme

1/4 cup parmesan cheese

black pepper to taste

spray cooking oil

Tools:

knife

cutting board

measuring cups and spoons

spoon

tongs

shallow dishes for mixing and dredging

aluminum foil

plastic bag and rolling pin or food processor (for pretzels)

Pour pretzel sticks into the food processor and pulse a few times until you have coarse chunks. If you're not using a food processor, instead put the pretzel sticks into a sealed plastic bag and hit or flatten with a rolling pin (or similar) until thoroughly smashed. If using the plastic bag approach, be sure to keep an eye out for pokey bits of pretzel putting holes in the bag and leaking crumbs everywhere, as the mess potential is high. Once the pretzels are crushed, toss them into a shallow dish and set the dish aside.

Take the thawed boneless, skinless chicken breast and cut it into roughly three inch long by inch wide strips. Just kind of pile them on the cutting board, since you'll be grabbing them one by one for dredging shortly. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before moving on to the next step.

Measure your mustard, honey, garlic powder, thyme, parsley, parmesan cheese, and pepper into a shallow dish. Crack an egg into this mixture and stir well to combine. We used stone ground mustard because we received some as part of a gift and the container was sitting untouched two months later. We also ran a little shy on the mustard mix (most likely because we started with nearly four pounds of chicken) and ended up making a second batch with spicy brown mustard and a dash of garlic hot sauce for the adults. We digress like this to say, in short, that you're welcome to use whatever mustard you have lying around. It'll work. Just mind your audience. We doubt the kiddos would have been happy with spicy chicken, but we sure were!

Once you have all three stages - chicken, mustard mixture, and pretzels - ready to go, lay out a sheet of aluminum foil and spritz it lightly with cooking oil. Grab a piece of the chicken with tongs, dredge it through the mustard mixture, flip it over, and dredge again to make sure you've coated all sides, then move it to the pretzel crumbs and roll it around until it's covered. Again using the tongs, remove the chicken from the pretzel crumbs and set on the foil.

Repeat until your foil sheet is half full. At this point, lift up the edges and pull the foil mostly closed over the chicken. Be sure to leave some room for moisture to vent. Get another foil sheet, spray it with oil, and fill it up with chicken the same way. Repeat these steps until you run out of chicken.

Put your foil packets of chicken onto a heated grill - we set our digital smoker to 425 degrees - and cook until the chicken reaches a safe internal temperature of at least 165 degrees. This took us about 25 minutes. Remove the packets carefully because the foil sometimes tears. A pizza peel is an ideal tool for this task if you have one, but in the likely event you don't, using a spatula or set of tongs ato nudge the foil packet off the grate and onto a baking sheet is also a perfectly serviceable solution.

In just a few steps and less than an hour you’ve got dinner on the table that’s sure to please even the pickiest eaters. You can stash this meal in your recipe list for times when you need something fast or if you’re just not feeling up to doing a lot of cooking. Fire up the grill, grab your ingredients and get ready to enjoy a fantastic meal that’s sure to please. Enjoy!

In the event that you’re turning to your gril because your stove isn’t working, rather than needing to keep the oven off, we’re here to help. Just give our offices a call and we’ll work with you to  figure out a date and time that works for your schedule. At Appliance Rescue Service our goal is to get your home running smoothly again, without all of the hassle that a broken appliance causes.

Is a Bosch Refrigerator Right for You? A Comprehensive Review

Price vs. Value: Is a Bosch Refrigerator Worth the Investment?

When it comes to hunting for a new refrigerator many of us look for years before finding the right one. You weigh the list of your ideal traits, you save up money so that you don't have to be restricted by price, and you write out the pros and the cons. And that's what we're doing with this post. We're looking at one of the appliances that we see often in our maintenance runs, a Bosch refrigerator. As always we don't want to push for getting new appliances until your old ones are completely dead, but we do believe that doing your research ahead of time ensures that you are happiest with your appliances.

You might start by looking at who has received the best rankings for their appliances, year after year, and find out that Bosch has the market cornered on that. Bosch received the highest numerical score in the proprietary Lifestory Research 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 America’s Most Trusted® Kitchen Brands study.

Next, you might be looking for a company that is paying attention to its environmental impact. Every appliance starts its journey at the production facility. Where all of the magic starts long before it ever gets to you. Something that many companies say they do, but as well all know, the proof is in the numbers. Bosch however can prove that they do just that. 40% of all of the patents that they apply for are environmentally focused, and that is before things are even being built.

At Bosch facilities, they have managed to get to a point that 92% of their production waste is recycled. Instead of going to a landfill, they managed to either reuse it or melt it back down to original components.

Once an appliance is built, you have to worry about shipping. One of the ways that Bosch cuts down on costs and material usage is at this stage. By trimming down and packing more efficiently they've managed to reduce fuel costs and CO2 emissions.  (Which translates to a lower price for you.)

One of the most important questions when it comes to a refrigerator is food storage. Bosch is tackling two of the most important issues: temperature control and freshness.

Temperature control

Modern kitchen featuring a sleek Bosch refrigerator with open doors showcasing its spacious and organized interior, highlighting the appliance's design, efficiency, and premium quality discussed in our comprehensive Bosch refrigerator review.

Courtesy of Bosch

Bosch has engineered their refrigerator so that once you program in the temperature, they hit as close to that temperature as possible and then stick. As we've mentioned in other posts, this is an issue that refrigerators struggle with because of defrost cycles and having the door open and close 20 billion times. Bosch though manages to course correct very quickly once the doors are shut. And as for defrost cycles, the temperatures barely budge at all.

Crispers + optional (but highly useful) ethylene gas filter

Crispers are a balancing act. On one hand, we want them to keep our fruits and vegetables in peak condition. This means keeping the temperatures cold but also maintaining humidity, which we try to avoid in the rest of the fridge.  You need enough humidity to keep things crisp, but not so much your food mold. Bosch has figured out that balance though, along with fighting another vegetable foe: ethylene gas. With the Fresh Protect filter, the fridge sucks up the gas that the food produces, keeping it in peak condition for longer.

Finally, you've got some of the best temperature control on the market right now. At Appliance Rescue Service, we're quick to point out useless apps and Internet of Things additions that make your home needlessly complicated. Bosch though had created an app that does what it says it will, without all of the extra clutter. It lets you set the exact temperatures you want in your fridge in all of the different zones, and then check that its working. That's it. It's an astounding idea somehow to have an app that does precisely what it says and no more, but Bosch has.

Warranties

Of course, you don't want to ever think about a brand-new appliance breaking. Honestly, neither do we, but they do, and that is where warranties come in. This is one of the reasons that we say warranties should be part of your pro and con list when it comes to purchasing new appliances. In the case of Bosch specifically, not only do they offer extended warranties on key components but they also go above and beyond the industry standard of one-year warranties.

Non-electric components are guaranteed for 2 years. Electric components are covered for five. And anything that is stainless steel is a lifetime guarantee. Bosch really does put their money where their mouth is by offering warranties like this.

Test

Courtesy of Bosch

Not everything is sunshine and roses, though. As with any proper consideration, you need to look at the cons as well. The biggest one in terms of a Bosch refrigerator is the price. At the bare minimum, a Bosch refrigerator new, is $2500. That is the bare minimum. The more advanced models can run you $5,000 or more. And while we know we have reviewed refrigerators at much higher price points, we also understand that it can be a bit of sticker shock if you're not expecting it.

Another complaint that we ran across with great surprise, was the refrigerator over-cooling. While this does tie back to the reliability of the appliance, it's not one that we see often as a complaint. However, this along with several other complaints, does lead us to suspect that in order to keep your refrigerator running properly, you need to schedule regular cleaning for the underside and back of it. If as we suspect, the issue is from the compressors and the coils, those need to be kept clean. This can be more work than some people want to do so it should properly go in the con section.

Bosch refrigerators stand out for their impressive temperature control, eco-friendly initiatives, and robust warranties. However, their premium price and the need for regular maintenance might give some buyers pause. If you're contemplating a Bosch fridge or any other appliance and find yourself facing issues with your current setup, Appliance Rescue Service is here to help. Our skilled technicians specialize in maintenance and repair, ensuring that your existing appliances perform at their best for as long as possible. Whether it's dealing with over-cooling problems, cleaning compressors and coils, or addressing any other concerns, we’re just a call away. Don’t let appliance troubles disrupt your home—reach out to us for expert care and keep your appliances running smoothly.

Revolutionizing Home Cooking: The Hottest Kitchen Tech Trends from CES 2024

Explore Smart Cookers, Multi-Function Microwaves, and More Redefining Kitchen Efficiency

The annual CES event never fails to astonish with groundbreaking tech, and 2024 was no exception, especially for kitchen enthusiasts. This year, the spotlight was on smart cooking solutions that blend cutting-edge technology with culinary creativity. From instant ice cream makers to AI-driven air fryers, the innovations showcased promise to make our kitchens smarter, faster, and more efficient. Join us as we explore the most exciting advancements in kitchen tech from CES 2024, and see how these gadgets could soon become indispensable in your daily cooking routine.

Sevvy

Sevvy is a company that is dedicated to making both cooking and baking healthier, faster, and more sustainable. At this year's CES, they introduced their smart cooker which uses a pulsed electrical field to cook food using 90% less energy than a traditional electric oven. According to their CEO, it preserves taste, retains 40% more nutrients, and uses less salt, sugar, and cooking fats. At CES, they were able to cook a base for blueberry muffins for the crowd that baked in less than 3 minutes and reportedly were enjoyed.

We are always interested when new technology comes to the market. In this case, though, we have to question the claims made. We have been trying to make food faster for centuries and while there are successes there are also many failures.  We look forward to finding out which category Sevvy will fall into.

Revolution Cooking

If you've heard the name Revolution Cooking in the past, it is most likely for their cutting edge toasters. And this year's CES though they debuted a microwave that can function as a toaster oven and an air fryer as well. It has the trademark revolution cooking touch screen panel the same as all of their toaster ovens so it will fit in nicely if you already own one.

According to Revolution Cooking the new microwave is able to use the same infrared heating as their typical toasters in addition to microwaves. So you can reheat leftovers with the microwave function and then using the infrared heating give that food and toast, hopefully making it the best leftovers you had in a while.

Courtesy of Revolution Cooking

There is one immediate downside that many people spotted. And that is the cost of the new toaster oven. While revolutionary cookings toaster ovens typically run for $400 the new microwave is going to cost you almost 2000 dollars. And that is without knowing how well it does at all three tasks. Much as we are excited to see something that is capable of doing multiple tasks in one go, we are less than keen on that price point. We do look forward to seeing just how well it does in the future though.

Intosee Secret Kitchen Hood

This time last year AirHood launched a project for a portable range hood that would let you remove and trap smoke and other fumes from a cramped kitchen.  But this is a portable option. What if you want something a little more permanent, without having to install a giant range hood?

Courtesy of Intosee

Intosee showed off a new idea at CES, though. They created a tube that can be installed into your kitchen counter. It retracts when not in use and pops up to draw smoke in from 360* around it. Instead of trapping the air, it runs it through a carbon filter and releases the clean air through an exhaust tube that outputs under the counter.

With so many people looking into the possibility of gas stoves we are excited at new options for range hoods that doesn't involve a giant overhead appliance.

Weber

Courtesy of Weber

This is something brand new to us, an infrared broiler, called the Weber Summit FS38X Smart Grill, another two in one tool. Not only is it equipped with sensors that will connect to your phone via a mobile app, but it can also make suggestions  for optimal cooling methods. These two together let you control the temperatures without having to disrupt the cooking process.

The broiler feature is one that we think is going to become a rather popular with other grills going forward. It allows you to quickly add a crust to a piece of meat

It also has a built-in safety feature that we're rather excited about. In the event that one of the burners goes out, the grill will try two options. If possible the grill will relight the burner. If that doesnt work, it shuts down and lets you know that there's a problem

 GE Profile Indoor Smart Smoker

Next up we have another tool for your outdoor kitchen, a GE Profile Smart Smoker.

Oh, did we say outdoor? Nope. This is a smoker that can work right in your kitchen. This was one of the most talked about appliances at CES, with due reason. The BBQ smoker uses a catalytic converter (yes, like the type that is part of your car) to remove carcinogens from smoke. This leaves just the hot air to slow coke your meats and fish.

Courtesy of GE

Unfortunately, as with any new appliance, there is a hefty price tag. Want to take a minute to guess what the price is?

If you guessed $1000  dollars, you'd be spot on!

Admittedly, if this is the price for being able to smoke our food safely during all weather? We might see the point.

Samsung Bespoke Smart Fridge

Once again Samsung is pushing the envelope with a new refrigerator. This year it's their new Bespoke Smart Fridge. This entry to their line up uses AI to identify up to 33 items in your fridge and suggest recipes that you can make using them.

ColdSnap

Courtesy of ColdSnap

This wasn’t ColdSnap’s first appearance at CES, but the "Keurig of ice cream makers" is inching closer to consumer release. The brand claims that its machines, which whip up bowls of ice cream in under 2 minutes, will be ready for purchase in 2025. For anyone who’s ever had a sudden craving for ice cream in the middle of a heatwave, the ColdSnap might be a game-changer. Imagine effortlessly producing a creamy dessert at the touch of a button. We’re eager to see if this gadget will indeed bring about a mini-revolution in home dessert making. Until then, we can only dream of instant ice cream at our fingertips.

Chef AI

Tech startup Chef AI is making waves with what it calls a "real one-touch" air fryer. Unlike your typical air fryer, which requires fiddling with settings and guesswork, Chef AI’s model leverages artificial intelligence to recognize and cook your food perfectly with just one press of a button. According to CEO Dean Khormaei, this appliance could turn even the most culinary-challenged individuals into competent chefs. Set to be available in the U.S. by September at $250, this air fryer promises convenience and sophistication. We’re excited to see if it can live up to its hype and truly simplify the cooking process for everyone.

Bartesian

Courtesy of Bartesian

Mixing cocktails can be an art form, but with Bartesian’s latest cocktail-mixing appliance, the Premier, even a novice can make a perfect dirty martini. This new gadget can hold up to four different spirits and, with its small touchscreen, allows users to select from 60 cocktail recipes. Simply drop a capsule into the machine, and seconds later, you have a premium cocktail ready to enjoy. Retailing at $369 and available later this year, the Premier could transform home bartending. We’re keen to see if it can consistently deliver top-notch cocktails and make entertaining a breeze. We’ve seen at-home bartender machines before though so we’ll see if Bartesian can deliver.

SeerGrills Perfecta

Courtesy of Perfecta

Would you put a good ribeye in a toaster? The makers of the SeerGrills Perfecta, a pricey new infrared vertical grill, think you should. This intriguing piece of kitchen hardware, which cooks meat standing upright with burners reaching up to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit, was one of the most curious finds at CES this year. Despite the absence of live cooking demos, the concept of searing steak in under 2 minutes without flipping is mind-boggling. The Perfecta promises evenly cooked, juicy meat by applying intense heat from both sides simultaneously. This unique approach, combined with AI-controlled cooking cycles, might just redefine grilling. However, at a whopping $3,500 (or $2,500 if you preorder by Jan. 15), it remains to be seen if it can truly deliver on its ambitious claims. For now, we'll have to take their word for it.

As CES 2024 wraps up, it’s clear that the future of kitchen technology is incredibly bright. From instant ice cream on demand to smart grills that perfect your steak with AI precision, these innovations are not just about making cooking faster and more efficient—they’re about enhancing the entire culinary experience. As these gadgets begin to hit the market, we eagerly anticipate how they will reshape our kitchens and elevate our home cooking.

For those in the Frisco-Dallas-Allen area, Appliance Rescue Service is here to help you integrate these cutting-edge technologies seamlessly into your home. Whether you need maintenance or repair for your new smart appliances, our expert technicians are ready to assist. From Dessert to Breakfast Bliss: Lemon Cake French Toast Delight

Easy Steps to Turn Leftover Cake into Breakfast Bliss

Have you ever bought or made a cake for an event or even just because you could, expecting it to disappear... then realized later that basically all of the cake was still there? Maybe you didn't have the turnout you expected. Maybe your family just wasn't terribly interested in the cake. It doesn't much matter why, but somehow you have a whole cake sitting there that you aren't about to scarf on your own.

That's us this week. We got a lemon cake from the grocery store, cut it up, and that was about as far as it got. So now we have 97% of a lemon cake and we...  Well, we don't like lemon cake enough for that silliness.

Time to get inventive! Thus, lemon cake French toast with blueberries.

Full disclosure: we used a two-day-old cake for this, not a fresh one, and it is assuredly store-bought. It's significantly sweeter and softer than the average homemade cake. It did not do the drying around the edges thing that a homemade loaf or bundt does when cut. If you work with homemade, the best way to get the same texture we did is to work with it fresh and not let it soak up too much of the custard.

Ingredients:

3 eggs

1/4 cup milk

Pinch salt

Salted butter

Lemon cake

2 cups frozen blueberries

1/4 cup water

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Tools:

Mixing bowl

Spatula

Spoon, knife, fork

Measuring cups and spoons

Heavy bottomed skillet

Saucepan with lid

Because the blueberries take longer, we strongly recommend starting with them. Measure your blueberries into a saucepan, then add the tablespoon of lemon juice, teaspoon of vanilla extract and the water.

If you find blueberries to be a bit sour, you can add a little sugar, but we like them just as they are and omit the extra sweetener. Set the heat to medium-low, cover the pan, set a timer for 15 minutes and basically forget about it for a bit.

In a shallow mixing bowl, whisk together your eggs and milk and add a tiny little pinch of salt. You can add a little more milk or use a little less, depending on your preferences - everyone does French toast a little differently in our experience. We don't recommend sugar, cinnamon or vanilla be added here as is common in most French toast recipes. The cake is already super, super sweet.

Melt some salted butter in a skillet over low heat - definitely do not sub unsalted butter, as the result will be all sweet with very little to balance it.

Dredge, flip, and dredge again the slices of cake through the custard, then add to the hot butter. Avoid allowing cake slices to sit in the custard, as they'll get soggy and fall apart.

Also try not to overcrowd the pan, as the slices will take longer to cook and be harder to flip. We fit five small slices into our skillet with enough room for flipping, but obviously your mileage may vary here. Maybe you have a giant cast iron skillet and can fit a whole cake in there. If you do, great - and also, where did you get it? We would like to have one too.

Cover the pan and let the cake cook for two to three minutes, then uncover, flip with a spatula (you may also need an assist from some tongs, depending on how soft your cake slices are), cover and repeat the "cook for two to three minutes" part. We like our French toast nice and toasty but not quite all the way to "scorched." Please adjust your cook time accordingly if you disagree.

Remove the finished slices from the pan and set them aside on a plate covered with another plate to keep some of the heat. If you have a crowd waiting, and said crowd is less interested in the blueberries that aren't done yet, you can just hand them off to hungry kiddos holding out plates as they leave the pan. Somehow, every variation of French toast seems to draw this crowd, so chances are pretty high you do have someone peeking around you trying to get the first piece.

Once the second wave of slices is in the skillet, grab a clean spoon so you can stir your blueberries. After giving them a quick stir, leave them uncovered for their remaining cook time. The goal is to have the liquid reduce some.

For the second wave of lemon cake French toast, we sprinkled some poppy seeds onto the slices as the first side cooked, then flipped and allowed the heat to sear them into place. This is totally optional, but hey, if you like lemon poppy seed muffins, why not give it a shot?

Once the blueberries are done, assuming there are still any slices of French toast left for the cook, make yourself a plate with a couple pieces and drown them in blueberry sauce.

Add some syrup if you're so inclined, but we'd definitely avoid any powdered sugar. Kids are thrilled; moms see the sugar content of this recipe and weep. Cake as a meal is kind of a rarity for a reason.

As you savor each sweet bite of this lemon cake French toast, you'll marvel at how a simple leftover can be transformed into a breakfast masterpiece. Whether you're enjoying it with family on a lazy Sunday morning or impressing guests at a brunch gathering, this recipe is sure to be a hit. So next time you find yourself with leftover cake, don't throw your hands up—embrace the opportunity to create something special. With a dash of creativity and a sprinkle of culinary magic, you can turn any ordinary day into a delicious adventure.

Beat the Heat: Preparing Your Texas Home for Summer

Essential Tasks to Keep Your Home Running Smoothly When the Heat Hits

Can you feel the warmth in the air? It's a sign that summer is already on its way! But before you start planning your vacation trip and weekend barbecues, your home needs to be prepared for the season too. There are plenty of tasks that you can do around the house to keep it cool and running smoothly during the hot months. Don't worry, though, we've got you covered. We'll guide you through each step so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the summer season without any worries.

We've sorted the tasks by inside the home and outside the home; so that you can do each task as the weather allows.

Inside the House

Ceiling Fan Rotation

Make sure to change your ceiling fan rotation Courtesy of eak_kkk

This one is relatively simple. As the year changes, you can benefit from changing the rotational direction of your fan. During the summer, it's best to have your fan turning counterclockwise. This pushes the cool air down towards the floor and helps you stay cool.

Plumbing Checks

Check Valves And Hoses

The valves and hoses for your washing machine, and your interior and exterior faucets all have connection points that can become loose and even break. As we are heading into summer and you're doing more you want to go ahead and check on these this way you catch any trouble before it starts. You will almost certainly need a professional to make any major changes, but just checking and finding trouble spots is something you can absolutely do on your own.

Inspect Your Pipes

As we all know, summer in Texas is ridiculously hot and dry. Unfortunately, that heat and lack of moisture can cause your pipes to deteriorate and crack. That can then cause the pipes to leak or, in a worst-case scenario, burst. So before you start forcing hundreds of gallons of water through your pipes, it's better to check on any and all of them that you can get to and catch any problems beforehand.

Insulate Your Home

The amount of work insulation usually requires Courtesy of justynkalp

Your home's insulation is essential for keeping you comfortable in both hot and cold weather. However, if you are unsure about the quality of insulation in your home or wish to enhance the existing insulation, several options are available. Checking the insulation in your attic and walls is crucial for ensuring your home is properly insulated. However, most of us hesitate to pull down sheetrock to check the insulation. Fortunately, there are alternative options available. One of the best options is an additive that can be mixed with paint and applied to roofs, interior, and exterior walls. Although it does not replace the need for proper insulation, it has proven to make a significant difference in energy efficiency, according to testing.

Swap Out Shades For Curtains

If you haven't already done it, we highly advise swapping out your winter shades for lighter summer curtains. Whether this means lighter in just color, or lighter in color and material is up to you. Being able to open your windows and let the breeze pour in is helpful for lowering your electric bill.

Fridge

The seasons are turning, which means it is the next time you need to clean out behind your fridge. It might not be the most glamorous task, but your fridge will most certainly appreciate being able to breathe properly. As always, make sure that you tend to the coils and any built-up dust or debris, and move your fridge back into proper alignment so that airflow can circulate around it.

Make sure that you're using a vacuum with a soft brush attachment. You don't want to use water back here as that can damage electrical components, and then you will have a very pretty and oversized box rather than a fridge.

Now that you've tended to the outside of your fridge let's check out the inside. You'll want to closely examine the seals on your refrigerator door all the way around, first by eye and then by hand. You want to ensure that there aren't any spots that are damaged and that the seal doesn't need to be replaced. Once you've checked that out, the next step is to grab a washcloth, some warm water, and soap so that you can clean out any stickiness or debris from the seal. Making sure that your doors can close and seal properly ensures that the fridge can maintain its temperature accurately. Taking care of your fridge like this ensures a much longer and happier life on the part of your appliance.

Washer And Dryer

Your washer and dryer need to have the seals checked, just like we did with your refrigerator. Again, you want to check by eye and then by hand for any signs of debris damage or, in the case of your washer, mold. For your dryer, you want to make sure that there isn't any accumulated lint in and around the seal.

Since the air is already warm during summer, you will want to address the settings on your dryer for summertime. It is not uncommon for dryers to catch fire from being turned up too high. While you're at it, you should also have the filters checked and cleaned by a professional to get rid of any built-up lint. At the same time, having someone look at your washing machine filters and drains would be a good step to roll into the same call.

Now that we've done the inside of the home, let's head outside and see what we can find.

Outside the House

Clean Gutters

It's been a while since we pointed it out, but having your gutters cleaned at least twice a year is extremely important. If your gutters are still jammed full from winter leaves, you can easily have cracks and leaks begin to form under and around them. With time those will begin to damage your home.

Repair Siding

If you have wood siding or shingles, now is a great time to check for post-winter rot. You can also check for dirt or mold that might have built up during the spring and winter rains. You can also look for and repair any damaged areas, faded stain, or chipped paint.

Inspect the Roof

A roof that has become damaged over time due to winter rot. Courtesy of congerdesign

Now, we're not suggesting that you do any roof repair yourself. Between the potential for a fall and the heat, we don't think many of us would want to go up. Instead, grab your binoculars and head across the street to take a look around at your roof. You will be looking for any cracked, curling, or missing shingles on your roof. And while you're at it, you want to make sure that there isn't any damaged or missing flashing. Keep a close look on your chimneys, your pipes or any skylights that you have. Just like with the valves and hoses, if you already know where to point a professional, then youve already solved part of the problem.

Clean The Grill

When you've got a cooler day, you might as well open up the grill and give it a good cleaning. Most of us love cooking on the grill during the summer, whether it's for family events or just regular weeknight dinners, grills are a uniquely summertime tool. To that end, make sure you go over everything. Not just to clean it, but to make sure that the connections are still in one piece. If there are any wires or pipes, check to see that nothing has been chewed on, or destroyed by the elements. Essentially, you want to go over any piece that could break and make sure it's functioning properly and then go over any piece that can be dirty and clean it before you light your grill for the first time.

As summer approaches, it's time to get your home ready for the heat and outdoor fun.
