Panel Ready: Elevating Kitchen Aesthetics

               While panel-ready appliances have been out for a while, they gained traction in 2023. Panel-ready appliances can be found for every major appliance and most small ones as well. Naturally, this includes your refrigerator. Panel-ready appliances are those that are unfinished and are ready to be covered with a panel that seamlessly matches the rest of your cabinetry. If you want a high-end kitchen, custom panels are the way to go.

               Invisible & Hidden: The Rise of Hidden Refrigerators

Even as pandemic restrictions have lifted, people have not shed their focus on staying home and being comfortable in their homes. Manufacturers are still responding to that need and are working to make refrigerators smarter, quieter, and as close to invisible as they can get.

Creating an invisible kitchen allows you to use the space in more than one way. It also helps with making smaller homes feel more open. The use of cabinetry faces and pocket doors creates the illusion of the refrigerator vanishing into the walls.

Handle-less Marvels: Embracing Futuristic Designs

Refrigerators are beginning to go handless. Although it’s not common yet, what started as recessing the handle into the door is now shifting towards no handles at all. Instead, manufacturers are looking at how to incorporate smart options like auto assist. Not only does this help the everyday user, but it also helps those who are disabled or injured to be able to get around with less trouble. 

Splash of Color: The Vibrant Evolution of Refrigerators

At the beginning of the year, we pointed out the LG MoodUp. While we haven't seen anything as bombastic as that, we have seen other manufacturers bringing about colored appliances. we've seen them and talked about them for years with ovens, but now refrigerators are beginning to get some love as well in blacks, blues, reds and more unique colors like purples and teal. There have been other manufacturers that have done this, such as the European SMEG, but it's not a common occurrence in the American market.

Zones Redefined: Customizable Spaces for Organized Living

We’ve talked recently about the importance of refrigerator zones and how they affect your food’s life span. The design of your refrigerator is one way that this can be affected. Multi-door refrigerators offer a unique option to mix and match the type of space you need.  They offer different zones that can be controlled from your phone as well as additional drawers and doors to allow you to better break down your fridge for your needs. 

LED Illumination: Efficiency and Elegance Inside Your Fridge

While it might sound odd, LED lighting is starting to gain traction in the market. LED lighting throughout your refrigerator and the various compartments makes a difference on multiple levels. First off, it allows you to cut down on your power usage as LEDs are up to 90% more efficient. Second, it gives your refrigerator a modern and sleek appearance. Finally, it makes it easier to find items within your fridge, ensuring you don’t lose that delicious bottle of jam to the back of a shelf. 

Smart Innovations: Cameras, Ice Filters, and Beyond

Cameras inside the refrigerator allow you to take stock of what you have even when you're out on the go. Instead of having to make a list of what you have at all times and trying to maintain that in your head, you can pull open your refrigerator app and check what's there. This doesn't necessarily get rid of your need for grocery lists or lists of what you need for different recipes, but it does help if you forget to check for an item or two before you leave. This continues to build momentum, and manufacturers are constantly trying to figure out something new. We look forward to what innovations the new year will bring us.

An interesting new feature that we noticed for the first time this year was filtered ice. While refrigerators making ice is nothing new, being able to get crystal clear ice is. Refrigerators are now being included with filtered water and ice as part of the system rather than having to be a specialized or aftermarket feature.

• True or False: Stainless Steel is Not a Big Deal

  Description text goes hereAlthough a variety of different metal finishes are in, as we've mentioned a few times already, stainless steel is very much out! We are so happy to say goodbye to this one, as trying to keep stainless steel shiny and fingerprint free is a pain.

  Black stainless steel also seems to be out, which is another blessing. Black stainless steel was very popular for a while, but it was only skin deep, as the finish itself was. Many times you would end up with scratches within the first few months of owning an appliance, and the stainless steel would show through. And while we are all for the artistic application of this technique, it's no good when it's not intentional.

• True or False: The Kitchen No Longer Needs A Triangle

  The Kitchen Triangle

  For ages and ages you typically had one person in the kitchen doing all of the cooking. So it made sense to have the kitchen triangle. This was a straight line between your sink your stove and your refrigerator. It made sense. With a single cook you'd ping pong between these three areas and there was nothing to get in your way. Now though we have hobbies, we have coffee bars, we have entire kitchens that are designed around people being in the kitchen as we cook. So the kitchen triangle is very much out.

• True or False: Eco-Friendly Designs Are In The Bin!

  False! There are, in fact, brands that are looking at making more efficient and eco-friendly devices available for your kitchen. Some of the examples are coffee makers with reusable filters and dishwashers that use even less water per load.

• True or False: Traditional Coil Stoves are a Thing of the Messy Past

  True! Electric coil stoves are very much on the way out. Although they were previously one of only two options, with the Advent of induction and other options, electric coil stoves are going the way of the dinosaurs. Celebrate with us at no longer having to scrape off burnt-on spills or worry about destroying the coils.

• True or False: Refrigerators Have Reached a Plateau

  False! Brands are looking to change the food zones that break down your fridge based on the different types of foods you want to keep on hand. Some of these are changeable as you need, others are specific to certain ingredients. The intention is so that you can keep your food fresher for longer.

• True or False: Technology in the Kitchen is Limited in What Can Be Done.

  False!

  Many different technologies are coming to your kitchen in 2023. We're not just looking at Wi-Fi and screens inside your refrigerator or Bluetooth that lets you connect to your refrigerator halfway across the house.

  Instead, many different sous vide tools are coming to your kitchen. Signature Kitchen suite is one of the first looking to bring a built-in sous vide range to the home cook. Although it still takes time, this slow cooking technique is capable of bringing restaurant quality food to your home.

• True or False: Everyone Is Sticking to Single Colors

  False!

  If the Pantone color of the year did not make it obvious enough, people are pushing to make their kitchens more and more personalized. Manufacturers and designers and aftermarket shops are all interested

  in helping make that happen. Whether it's a particular oven from La Cornue, or getting the MoodUP refrigerator when it becomes available, you can do it. Custom-colored appliances are available, and there's hardly any limit to what colors you can choose.

• True or False: Refrigerators with Tablets are Here To Stay

  If you've read our blog for any length of time you know that we very much despised the trend of refrigerators with tablets built in. Between having to worry about it being a security risk, or not being updated only a few months after you purchased, it they weren't worth the trouble. We are so happy to see that designers are realizing that this is not the way to make appliances smart.

What We See Happening In the Heart of Our Homes

What is in, in 2023, and what's on the way out? This week we're looking at the trends designers are predicting around our kitchens. We're looking at the cabinets, surfaces, paints, and materials. Everything is up in the air this year, with just one thing staying constant, the kitchen is the place to be. 

Cabinet Trends in 2023

Mixed Metals

As we predicted last year, we're seeing lots of different metals and finishes mixing in the kitchen. Stainless is no longer the default; people want brass, bronze, nickel, and more, giving a rich, layered look.

Oversized Hardware

Many designers, both for cabinets and kitchens in general, are seeing more requests for oversized hardware in the kitchen. Since we are mixing metals so much, it's not surprising that people want the hardware for their drawers, shelving, and doors to get a spotlight.

Creative Cabinet Options

It's no longer about whether your cabinets are recessed versus floating. People are getting creative and going even further against the idea of cabinets being meant only to store and hide items. We're seeing unique and interesting outside designs for them, such as using butcher block cabinets.

Drawers Please! 

Building off the last point, the trend of having only lower cabinets is morphing into having only lower drawers. People want the ability to pull out what's inside the cabinets for easier access, and we don't blame them.

Furniture-Like Cabinets

Because we have more drawers and people want them to look like the rest of this house and make it appear more furniture-like. They're adding details like trim and specific styles of hardware that are seen in other rooms, such as bedrooms or bathrooms.

Sustainability is Going Strong

People also aren't hesitating to use unconventional materials. Sustainable materials are here to stay, and that trend is only getting bigger year after year. Materials like bamboo or wood that's harvested sustainably or built using scraps from other industries. All of these are being experimented with to see what brings the best look.

Surface Trends in 2023

'Soft' materials 

Although this one doesn't apply just to the surfaces within your kitchen, many people are going for more neutral and soft materials. In 2023 we see very neutral colors on the rise, like light oak, linen, and terracotta.

Stone 

Stone is everywhere we look this year. People are loving having stabilized stone in all sorts of unique colors. They're using them on the ceilings or to wrap around their Islands. And they are absolutely right to do so. These stones are gorgeous, and we cannot wait to see where else people use them.

Backsplashes In Solid Pieces

Bouncing right off, the last point is using stone or other materials such as wood or resin in one giant slab for the backsplash. Subway tiles are considered to be officially out as of this year. And although we expect to continue seeing them as a trend, at least it seems that having a solid slab is on the rise.

Color Trends in 2023

Bold

With colors being chosen like Viva Magenta, we're seeing that people aren't scared to go bold in their kitchens. More and more unexpected and bold color choices and combinations are being shown off in homes large and small. And this is a trend we don't expect to go away any time soon.

Just like we called in an earlier post of ours, people are painting the most unexpected places to brighten up their kitchens. It's no longer just your walls or cabinets that deserve the chance to shine. It's your kitchen island. Or the insides of drawers. Or even your ceiling! All of these places and more are a chance to blend together to create a space that is uniquely yours.

Blues and Greens 

Blues and greens are still a very prominent color pairing within kitchen design. As we pointed out last year, people want their homes to be places to shelter to be safe in all aspects. And blues and greens are very calming and soothing colors for many of us.

Brights and Woods 

Right after that, though, there's nothing that says those blues and greens have to be pastels or muted tones. People are absolutely willing to take bright greens or vivid blues and pair them with rich woods. And the pairing works really well. We expect to see this one continue for quite some time as people try out different combinations and different woods come and go in popularity. 

Details and Miscellaneous Trends in 2023

Unique Finds

We've mentioned in the past that people no longer see the point in keeping their personality out of their kitchens; this is another factor that's proving true this year as people are bringing more and more of their art into the kitchen. Whether it's unique finds from their travels, things they've created themselves, or things they've picked up in thrift stores and antique malls, the kitchen is no longer seen as a sterile space. While we expect that pendulum to swing back at some point, it certainly isn't right now.

Statement Lighting 

You need to end custom lighting is another way people are looking to dress up their kitchens.

Instead of using recessed can lights, as has been done since the early 2000s, people see the value in having statement lights again. And when so many can be used to accentuate or highlights the colors and metals that surround them in the rest of the kitchen, it makes complete sense. We expect this one to stick around for quite some time. 

Recessed Outlets 

One thing that is being hidden away, though, is our electrical outlets! While having proper outlet placement in the kitchen is extraordinarily important, we find that the need for outlets that stick out is not nearly as appealing to us. We have showcased different options for recessed outlets in the past, and we're excited to see those and other options being made available to the common market.

• Display Your Art in the Kitchen 

  This one is true!  It's become very popular this year to bring art all throughout the home. Companies like Displate offer art that is sturdy enough to hold up in the kitchen, while others are looking at digital frames like the ones from Samsung.

• Bringing Back Freestanding Bathtubs 

  This  one is also true.  We're loving having bathtubs be the center of the bathroom again. Although the concept of self-care is a bit contentious as to what defines it, there are many different reasons to love a good soak. From the physical to the mental to the emotional, there are dozens of benefits to a soak in the tub, and having you bathroom's central focus on it just makes sense.

•  Bring the Garden Inside with Floral Wallpapers

  This one is true. We talked earlier this year about bringing in larger patterns for wallpaper into the home, gardens seem to be what's really getting the focus this year. We can't say how long this trend will last, but with peel and stick wallpaper, we don't think there's any harm in finding the perfect wallpaper for you.

• Let Yourself Breathe with High Ceilings

  Here we've got out first false. While this is a fantastic design option in your blogger's opinion, current design trends aren't currently focusing on this one. The towering ceilings are lovely to look at, it's not an easy look to get if you're not building your own home or purchasing an older property.

• Make It Minimal with Metal and Glass 

  This one is also false, and is actually a trend from the 1920s instead. Check out the precise lines and the shine of glass, it's a very Art Deco style. At the moment the straight lines aren't so much a thing as are curves and more natural shapes.

• Make Your Room Royal with a Four Poster Bed 

  This one is very true and we love it! As we've mentioned previously, we're all over the idea of being comfy in your home, that your home should be your castle and your getaway. This trend is taking that to the next level and bringing back four poster beds and we are loving it.

• Be Comfy All Year Long With Cozy Fabrics

  Another true one, and again, very much an outcome from the pandemic. Adding in comfort to every room, when you don't know what a given day will bring you, is a fantastic idea. Whether that's linens and cottons or velvets and weighted blankets, we love that people are focusing on making their home safe, clean and comfortable 

• Let Your Room Be as Complicated As You Are With Contrasting Decor

  This one is true, and admittedly, we can see why. By having your room one color and then bringing in different contrasting colors, it allows you to have more play and expression in different rooms.

• Bring in the Bling with Art Deco 

  Sadly, this one is false. Although Art Deco has become popular again, at the moment the trends are heading more towards those of Art Nouveau, rounded natural shapes and natural colors.

• Flounces Everywhere! 

  Thankfully, in your Blogger's opinion at least, this one is currently false. While flounces are currently rather popular as an accent when it comes to clothes right now, we aren't seeing them transition back into decor just yet.

• Paint Your Kitchen, Anything BUT White 

  If you paid attention to an earlier post this year, you'd be wise and know this one is true! Not only are people getting rid of their upper cabinets, but they're also painting their cabinets all sorts of vibrant and stunning colors.

• Ancient Egyptian Design 

  Although Egyptian design is always very interesting, at the moment it's not a top trend. Which is either a  very good thing, or very bad, depending on your love of gold and blues.

• Let Your Sofa Be Curvy 

  This one is true! As much as we're all loving on the curves in nature, we're applying it to our sofas as well. We don't see this one hanging on for long though, as it is rather difficult to plan around a curved piece of furniture, as people in the 70s knew all too well.

• Plaster work (gilt optional) 

  As interesting as plasterwork is, we're rounding out our list with a false!  Plaster work has the possibility to add so much character to a room, but for the time being it's not a trend. Probably because of the price that goes into it.

Trends are something we love discussing here on Appliance Repair Service. We’ve talked popular ones, new ones, and ones that died miserable deaths. Now we’re taking a look at different ones that are popular here in 2022.  These are things you may be thinking about jumping on immediately, but we’d advise waiting a while to see how these trends play out, so you aren’t spending thousands of dollars on something you’ll hate in three months. 

Open Concept Kitchens

From the early 2000s up until now, the open concept was the most common style of new home on the market.  They’re all about a home being able to serve multiple purposes with very little change or adjustment. Being able to shift seamlessly from one room to another, and having the family together without having to hunt through different rooms. 

With Covid and the rise of people working from home, the open concept plan doesn’t work either in your kitchen or for your whole house. Being able to separate ourselves out, and find quiet during different points of the day is important. You might need to use one area for an office, or another for your child’s school area, and section those off. You don’t want to hear shouts of “hey, where do we have the oregano” when you’re in the middle of a zoom meeting” if it can be avoided after all. 

The Color of the Year 

Going for the color of the year is something many of us want to do. There are hundreds of blog posts, magazine articles, and social media posts all over the net talking about how to best use Very Peri in your house, your kitchen, or your wardrobe. Many of us want to have the most recent colors or designs when it comes to somewhere we spend a large amount of our time. It’s the same as working on the rest of your house, where you might update every few years and bring in either a color you love or whatever the most popular color series is.  In the kitchen, we’re not talking just about painting your kitchen the color of the year. Many companies also will update their ranges, ovens, and refrigerators to come in new and different colors. (This year for example is seeing many companies adding “Mint Green” as one of the colors they offer?) 

But, we have to point out that color trends change. Like we point out every year, colors that were popular this year may not be next year. A better option might be to choose a color palette that you love and work from that in different ways. You might bring in tile with several of the colors that you like. Or paint your cabinets different colors to blend into the overall pattern.  This allows you to more easily change out colors when you want to refresh, but it also means that you’re standing out on your own. 

Air Sous Vide 

Think about the concept of sous vide, if you’ve ever run into it. If you haven’t, it’s a process of sealing food into a bag and boiling it until it’s cooked just right. Air sous vide then, is the same concept, except you’re using air. 

There are too many mixed thoughts on this one and not enough hard reviews about how well it works or recipes that are repeatable. We don’t recommend getting this one until (and if) they manage to solidify the way it works.

Smart Appliances

We’ve spoken before about smart appliances, both the uses of them and the downsides. We want them to be able to do all sorts of things and make our homes more automated so that we can focus on other aspects of our lives. The truth is though, that propaganda is just that, propaganda. Smart appliances might promise you the moon, but they aren’t there yet. 

With this one, we advise keeping a level head on what they can do vs what they can’t. Instead of thinking that your oven will cook you a perfect steak with potatoes and broccoli on the side and a perfect bearnaise sauce on the side.  Instead, it’s able to turn on when you tell it to, alert you when it’s come to the proper temperature and let you know when what you’re cooking has finished cooking. 

Dual Dishwashers In Your Kitchen

This one is lovely, honestly. It’s just a matter of what do you need? Do you need to have two dishwashers in your kitchen? Do you entertain a couple of times a week and deal with all of the dishes inherent in that? Or do you have a large family that you prepare food for and you need to be able to wash all of the dishes easily and without leaving yourself exhausted?
If the answer to that is no, then you might want to reconsider whether you want to bring a second dishwasher into your home. While it’s really popular, it’s not always needed, in which case, why bother? Instead, take a look at how much you use your current dishwasher. Would a larger one be beneficial for you? Do you need a different style? Maybe one that can handle larger pots and pans due to the amount of cooking/baking you do now?
