The Forgotten Appliance: Troubleshooting Vent Hood Issues

We all think about cleaning our refrigerators, dishwashers, cooktops, and ovens, but how often do you think about vent hood maintenance?

Vent hoods are typically the forgotten appliance. You’re happy with how they are doing until they are no longer running well. Here are a few signs from Appliance Rescue Service in Dallas, Texas that indicate it is time for some TLC and possibly vent hood repair in Dallas:

1.  Vent Hood Not Clearing Smoke.

First, it’s important to diagnose whether your vent hood truly vents out of your home, or if it circulates the air to clean it? Either way, if the smoke does not appear to clear – even on the highest setting – then something isn’t functioning properly. The issue might be as simple as a dirty air filter that needs to be cleaned and reinstalled. Or, the issue could be more involved – like a worn out vent hood fan motor or grease clogged vent. If you can’t immediately diagnose the issue, it’s a good idea to call the best appliance service in McKinney, Plano, and Dallas to take a look.

2.  Vent Hood Makes Loud Noises When Running.

You know when an appliance is running properly, and when it just doesn’t sound right. If your vent hood sounds like it needs a little TLC, then it probably does! The issue is likely with the motor, either it’s rubbing against something because of grease buildup or it might just be time for the motor to be replaced. Clean the unit thoroughly, and if that doesn’t solve the issue, call us to diagnose the issue.

3.  Vent Hood Won’t Turn On.

After checking the electrical box to make sure there isn’t a tripped circuit, come back and see if your vent hood will turn on. If nothing works, then you’re likely looking at a control panel malfunction and that will require a professional to diagnose and replace. Depending on the age and brand of your vent hood, replacing the unit might be a better option, but our technicians can make a recommendation after evaluating the problem.

Read on for range hood spring cleaning tips from Appliance Rescue Service – the best appliance repair company in Dallas:

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Chances are, you can find everything you need for range hood cleaning in your pantry. Grab the following supplies before beginning your project:

·     Large stock pot

·     Dish soap

·     Baking soda

·     Vinegar or Ammonia

·     Scratchless scrubbing sponge

Step 2: Create Your Cleaning Mixture

Begin by boiling water in your large stock pot, filling the pot ¾ of the way. Once water is boiling, pour in just a tiny dollop of dish soap. You want the water to boil and bubble, but not to boil over during the range hood cleaning process. Next, slowly pour in ½ cup baking soda until mixture is fizzing.

Step 3: Clean the Filter

Once the pot of water is fizzing, slowly lower the range hood filter into the solution. Watch it eat away at the grease and grime on your filter. Rotate the filter in the solution until all sides are clean. Is your filter too big for the pot? Lay it flat in a jelly roll pan and pour the solution over it to clean your range hood filter.

Step 4: Clean the Range Hood

Dip your sponge in the remaining solution and gently scrub the exterior of your range hood until the grime and grit is gone. If you feel like the solution is not doing a good enough job, add a touch of vinegar or ammonia to the sponge and continue scrubbing.

Hopefully this simple cleaning method will help you keep your range hood in perfect working order! Should you ever need range hood repair in Dallas, Appliance Rescue Service is here to help! How to Clean a Range Hood Filter

When you’re standing at a cooktop, you are usually looking down. But have you ever looked up?

It’s not pretty is it?

Our range hoods take a beating! Grease and grime from cooking gets stuck up in the range hood filter, and without proper cleaning, this grease can cause grease fires and render the range hood ineffective.

Follow these tips from Appliance Rescue for range hood filter cleaning:

1.   Remove Filter:

Look for the loops or hooks that are holding the range hood filter in place and carefully remove it.

2.   Fill Sink with Water:

Plug the sink and pour hot, boiling water into it. You’ll want to put enough in there to fully submerge your filter. Also, the hotter the water, the more effective. We do not recommend using your hot tap water, as it’s just not quite warm enough.

3.   Add Cleaning Agents:

Grab your favorite de-greasing dish soap and squirt a generous glob into the water. Next, add ¼ cup of baking soda. Use a long brush or spoon to mix it up until it’s nice and soapy.

4.   Add Filter:

Drop your filter into the water and let it soak for about 10 minutes – longer if it was extra soiled.

5.   Scrub Filter:

Use a non-abrasive sponge or brush to scrub the filter. Add additional dish soap to the sponge as needed until it is clean and de-greased.

6.   Rinse:

Once satisfied with the range hood filter cleaning, dry the filter and place it on a soft, lint-free cloth for drying.

7.   Reinstall:

You are now ready to install the filter.

Appliance Rescue recommends cleaning your range hood filter once a month to avoid grease buildup, increase longevity of the hood, and maximize effectiveness. Should you ever need help with range hood repair in Dallas, call Appliance Rescue Service in Dallas, Texas today.
