The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of CES 2026 Home Technology

Do you like knowing the hottest and most useful new gadgets to put into your home? Or, perhaps, you just want to know what’s on the horizon for the savvy tech buyer out there? Yes, this year marks another rendition of major companies showing off their coolest new toys for people to buy, or at least, what they are looking to release in the near future. So, what has this year’s show given us to look forward to, and just as important, what has it shown us that we need to steer clear of?

Diving into this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, we want to first focus on the good things – what exactly have tech companies unveiled that actually seems useful, or at least interesting, to us.

1. Allergen Alert
First off on our list is actually a product that is coming from a relative newcomer in the tech industry. A French startup has shown off a new unit still under development – the Allergen Alert. So, what exactly does this device do? Well, it is a portable device designed to detect food allergens no matter where you go. While it is still relatively young in its development cycle, the tech shows serious promise, giving an easy way for those with food allergies to check what they’re putting into their body before they run the risk of an untimely hospital trip. Right now, the tech can only detect gluten and lactose, but the company is working to expand the capabilities of future units once the initial run is launched. We think this is a massive advance in medical safety, and provides some critical peace of mind, especially when traveling.

2. Clear Drop
Let’s face it, garbage and recycling can always do with just a bit more improvement. Indeed, a good chunk of the work that has to be done before any plastics can even begin to be recycled takes up a critical chunk of time – that being, when the plastics start to break apart and leech into the environment. Thus, we wanted to bring a little light onto Clear Drop, a new system for composting your soft plastics and compressing them down into bricks that are far easier to work with, and far more likely to see the far end of recycling, rather than the bottom half of a landfill. This system is mainly focused on things like plastic bags, gloves, and similar soft, single use wrappings that often become pollution by accident.

3. Droplet
Now for possibly the most utilitarian of our picks for good things from the 2026 CES, but this is a big one – Droplet, a device that simply clamps onto your home’s water pipes and monitors for leaks. Now, this device might sound a tad odd, after all, there are other machines that can watch for a water leak or a frozen pipe, but Droplet has a leg up on all of those. Rather than requiring a pricey installation, Hydrific’s Droplet device simply clamps onto existing pipes, no removals or long install process required. Just as well, this machine connects to your phone, providing updates if it detects an unusual water flow, giving you a chance to get on top of any leaks or burst pipes before they become a serious issue.

With those highlights, let’s get onto some of the shows that we just thought were weird, off-putting, or just outright bad.

1. Superheat
Our first pick for this category isn’t exactly bad, per se, just a bit strange to us. Superheat is a company designing water heaters that combo as bitcoin mining units. Why, you might ask? Easy! The use of AI and mining processors generates a large amount of heat, and requires water to keep them cooled down adequately. Thus, instead of wasting all of that energy, the excess heat can be used to warm up your water to take a shower. Novel concept, but it still struck us as odd – After all, that’s a lot of investment for a water heater that breaks as soon as a chip shorts out.

2. Lenovo AI-Powered Personal Display Concept
We get it, these days, people spend too much time in front of their screens, and a lot of folks don’t spend enough time sleeping. That being said, one thing that caught us off-guard was a concept for a computer that lets you know that you look tired. As much as we do appreciate a check-in on our well being, getting judged by our work machine is far from ideal. Thankfully, this one was just a concept for a potential future product, rather than a device hitting the market, but the idea still left us with a bit of a sour taste. Maybe the brutal honesty was all that put us off, though.

3. Vivoo Smart Toilet
The push for an ‘internet of things’ in the home of tomorrow is a strong one, and we here have already pointed out some of the devices that can actually be beneficial to one’s home. The bathroom, though, is one room where maybe there should be a little less tech integration. Yes, Vivoo designed an attachable sensor for your… toilet. The idea is rather well-intentioned, with the sensor designed to monitor hydration levels based on your bathroom trips, but the idea of your toilet keeping an eye on your every break is outright creepy to us.

Finally, the ugly. Here, we only have one entry, but it is a bit of a doozy. Was it bad? Maybe not, but it certainly wasn’t performing as well as anyone would have hoped.

LG CLOiD
The idea of a robotic home assistant has been something that has sat in the mind of regular people since Isaac Asimov first penned the novel ‘I, Robot’. That being said, the tech has always seemed just out of reach, but with recent advances in technology, it seems… still out of reach, given what was shown off. The idea of LG’s CLOiD robot is to be a simple, easy-to-use domestic assistant, handling tasks like unloading dishes, doing the laundry, and even folding it up for you! The trouble came with that last bit, though – CLOiD seems to be missing that deft touch to help it handle such a task, resulting in a slow, clumsy handling of the laundry that caused many in the audience to cringe just a bit. Indeed, as promising as this technology seems to be, from our perspective, it’s still a ways off from being the true extra pair of artificial hands we dream of.
